The Austral University of Chile’s medical specialty programs represent an area defined by medical knowledge and practice in terms of development, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and our degrees confer knowledge, abilities, and clinical skills. The university began training medical specialists in 1972, and it currently offers 10 medical specialty programs and 3 subspecialty programs. The Primary Specialty Programs are completed after attaining the title of doctor/surgeon and have a minimum duration of three years. Meanwhile, the Subspecialty and Secondary Specialty Programs are undertaken after finishing a Primary Specialty, and they have a minimum duration of 1 year.
Medical Specialties
This program is intended to train anatomist-pathologists with wide knowledge in pathology capable of responding to inquiries on biopsies, cytological exams, and necropsies. The program develops diagnostic abilities through training in routine methods and advanced diagnostic support. This program helps constitute the activities of the Institute of Anatomy, Histology, and Pathology of the Faculty of Medicine, and it is carried out in the Sub-Department of Pathological Anatomy of the Valdivia Central Hospital, as well as in academic units at the Isla Teja Campus of the Austral University of Chile.
The plan of studies has a duration of three years, and it is a full-time program. The educational methodology employed includes practical-theoretical pedagogy as well as theoretical learning through participation in seminars and bibliographic meetings in which specialized themes are analyzed. Self-study is also a component of this degree program. The specialty program also includes external practicums and courses as well as research.

This Medical Specialist program has the objective of training doctors capable of delivering anesthetic care, critical medicine, and pain therapy is different hospital environments, working both autonomously or as part of a team with professionalism and a solid ethical foundation. The program forms part of the activities of the Institute of specialties of the Faculty of Medicine, and it is carried out in the Sub-Department of Surgical Wards of the Valdivia Central Hospital. In addition, it includes practicums in other training centers aimed at particular areas of the specialty.
The plan of studies has a duration of three years, and it is full-time. It is comprised of a Basic Sciences Cycle, which includes anesthetics-oriented courses such as Biomedical Science Publications, Clinical Investigation, and Epidemiology, as well as a Clinical Anesthetics Cycle, which includes rotations in the subspecialty programs of Anesthesiology and Critical Medicine.

The Medical Specialist program in General Surgery has the objective of training doctors with solid theoretical knowledge and capabilities in both general and emergency surgery. This will allow graduates to address the pathologies prevalent in this specialty area, and it will also allow them to join multidisciplinary work teams with strong moral and ethical foundations. This program forms part of the academic activities of the Institute of Surgery of the university’s Faculty of Medicine, and it is carried out in the Sub-Department of Surgery of the Valdivia Central Hospital. In addition, it includes practicums in other national training centers where particular areas of the specialty are developed.

This program seeks to train family doctors capable of delivering continuing care to the family and the community, maintaining a comprehensive vision of the health-illness process in the preventive, curative, and rehabilitative spheres throughout the lifecycle. The program is taught in a semi-residential fashion and is overseen by the Institute of Clinical Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine’s Osorno Clinical Campus. During the instructional period, students carry out on-campus activities in university departments as well as activities in secondary and tertiary clinic departments and in the communities in which they work.

The objective of this program is to train Medical Specialists in Internal Medicine who have a solid scientific foundation and possess the abilities necessary for optimal practice in the specialty area. Graduates will perform competently in the clinical-healthcare field as well as in research and teaching. The program constitutes part of the activities of the Institute of Medicine of the university’s Faculty of Medicine, and it is carried out in the Sub-Department of Medicine of the Valdivia Central Hospital, as well as in academic units of the university.
The plan of studies has a duration of three years, and it is full-time. The educational methodology includes practical-theoretical learning through which the resident works as a doctor treating both hospitalized and outpatient individuals under the guidance of a mentor professor. This program trains general specialists in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with solid preparation in the physiology and physiopathology of the female genitals, with fundamental skills in the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the specialty area. Graduates will be capable of developing prevention and protection programs, as well as programs aimed at the promotion of maternal and perinatal health. They will also be equipped to investigate and manage prevalent gynaecological pathologies and develop family planning efforts based on demographic characteristics. The program forms part of the activities of the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Faculty of Medicine, and it is carried out in the Sub-Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Valdivia Central Hospital as well as in academic units of the Austral University of Chile.

The program forms part of the activities of the Institute of Locomotor Apparatus and Rehabilitation, and it is carried out in the Sub-Department of Traumatology of the Valdivia Central Hospital. This program has the objective of training general practitioners in pediatrics with solid scientific preparation in the area of clinical work, research, and teaching. Graduates will be capable of planning and administering work in children’s health in accordance with the cultural and socioeconomic realities of the nation. This program forms part of the activities of the university’s Institute of Pediatrics and is carried out in the Sub-Department of Pediatrics of the Valdivia Central Hospital, as well as in the UACh Integrated Outpatient Facility (CENAIA), also in Valdivia.

This program trains specialists in general adult psychiatry with strong knowledge bases in etiopathogenesis and therapy for psychiatric pathology. Graduates will be capable of planning community mental health programs and skilled in the application of teaching and research methodology in the field. They will have carried out a supervised practicum in integrative psychotherapy informed by an ethical perspective. The program comprises part of the activities of the university’s Institute of Clinical Neurosciences and is carried out in the Sub-Department of Psychiatry of the Valdivia Central Hospital and the Osorno Central Hospital, as well as in academic units within the Austral University of Chile.

This program aims to train medical sub-specialists in pediatric oncology and hematology with solid theoretical-practical knowledge that allows them to address diagnosis and treatment in this area, as well as the standard invasive procedures of pediatric oncological and hematological practice.
The plan of studies has a duration of two years, which includes 44 hours weekly of on-site study. The program’s prerequisites include the academic titles of Medical Surgeon and Medical Specialist in Pediatrics. Training is based on cycles of laboratory work, clinical work, and research in hematology and oncology. The Laboratory Cycle includes learning and acquisition of knowledge in general hematological laboratory procedures, medullary cytology, blood bank work, and specialized laboratory work. The Clinical Cycle includes medical care for children with different blood diseases and solid tumors, as well as theoretical activities. The Research Cycle entails the completion of the degree of Master of Clinical and Epidemiological Methodologies for the Medical Practice.

This program has the objective of training clinical nephrologists capable of working in both healthcare and academic settings at the national level. Graduates will develop advanced knowledge of physiopathology, immunology, and renal pathology, along with a strong scientific and academic engagement with the field and solid bioethical principles.
The plan of studies has a duration of two years, which includes 44 hours weekly of on-site study. Program prerequisites include the academic titles of Medical Surgeon and Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. Work is carried in the Nephrology Unit of the Valdivia Central Hospital, a referral center for nephropathological diagnosis for all of southern Chile that includes the following sections: renal immunopathology, renal biopsy, and histocompatibility and transplant laboratory. The program highlights different areas of research carried out in this medical unit that are financed nationally and internationally, the results of which are published in well-known scholarly journals and presented at national and international conferences.

This program aims to train Medical Subspecialists in Hematology capable of efficiently attending to patients with illnesses of the blood and related organs. Graduates will be competent in human, technical, clinical, and laboratory skills, staying continuously up-to-date in terms of scientific-technical advances in the subspecialty area and adapting to the possibilities of their places of employment.
The plan of studies has a duration of two years, with on-campus study of 44 hours weekly. Requirements for the program include the title of Medical Surgeon and Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. The program is carried out in the Hematology Unit of the Institute of Medicine of the Austral University of Chile, as well as in the Medical Service, Specialty Clinic, Cytometry-Cytogenetics Laboratory, and Blood Bank Unit of the Valdivia Central Hospital.
